Allocations, Lettings and Private Sector Housing structure and responsibilities

The Allocations, Lettings, and Private Sector Housing Service is responsible for ensuring a fair and transparent allocation of homes and temporary accommodation while prioritising those in the greatest need of housing.

This team also oversees our private sector housing services, which work in partnership with landlords to improve the quality of housing.

What we do

Temporary Accommodation Service

The team ensures we can meet our legal duty to provide suitable emergency and temporary housing for homeless households. They do this by:

  • finding and providing a range of homes to meet the demand for temporary housing
  • assessing households and placing them in suitable homes – council-owned, private or commercial
  • making sure all temporary housing meets health and safety rules
  • supporting and helping tenants while they live in temporary housing
  • providing a day-to-day property and tenant management service
  • arranging and managing both urgent and planned repairs
  • cleaning and repairing empty homes quickly so they can be used again

Private Sector Housing Service

The team helps ensure private rented homes in Camden are safe, fair and well managed. They do this by:

  • making sure private rented homes meet legal standards under the Housing Act 2004
  • responding to complaints from private tenants
  • licensing shared homes that need a mandatory or additional licence
  • giving financial help through the Housing Renewal Assistance Policy, including disabled facilities grants
  • running the London Landlord Accreditation Scheme for local councils across London
  • hosting forums for private landlords and tenants

Allocations and Voids Service

The team manages how social housing is allocated and let across the borough. Based on the council's housing allocation scheme, they ensure that people with the greatest need are rehoused first. They do this by:

  • verifying and approving applications for social housing
  • managing the full lettings process – from advertising homes to shortlisting, checking details and arranging viewings
  • carrying out medical and housing assessments
  • handling complaints and reviews about housing decisions
  • helping tenants who want to move to a smaller home
  • managing the mutual exchange process for social housing tenants
