Preservation of historic features

Article 4 Directions remove certain permitted development rights from houses and flats in the following conservation areas. The Directions are also aimed at ensuring that historic features are preserved and, where possible, repaired rather than replaced.

The Directions and related fact sheets explain what types of works need planning permission that previously did not.

We are reviewing the Article 4 Directions in the borough that relate to conservations area.  

This includes 

  • introducing a new Article 4 Directions in Redington/Frognal and Fitzjohns/Netherhall Conservations Area,
  • reviewing the existing Article 4 Directions in Hampstead, South Hampstead and Belsize Conservation Areas.

Belsize conservation area

  • Article 4 Direction removing permitted development rights for erection of structures within the surrounding area of the property. This is for a purpose that is incidental to the enjoyment of the property.
