Balcony safety in your council home
We want you to use and enjoy your balcony safely.
How to report balcony issues
Tell us straight away if:
- you’re worried about the safety of your balcony railings or panels
- the balcony door or lock is faulty
We’ll arrange for an inspection by our repair team. Find out how to report a repair.
What happens next
We may make a temporary repair to keep you safe and secure.
If there’s a serious problem, we may lock or secure the balcony door until repairs are complete and it’s safe to use again.
How to use your balcony safely
Always:
- supervise children and anyone who may be at risk when they’re on the balcony
- keep furniture and other items away from the edge so no one can climb or lean over
- remember that pigeon netting is not play equipment and is not designed to hold weight
Never:
- store items on your balcony, especially anything that can catch fire
- use a barbecue on your balcony
- drop or throw cigarettes from your balcony or windows
