Book cycle training for children
We offer three levels of free cycle training to suit your child’s needs:
- Level 1: Child learn to cycle
- Level 2: Child building cycle confidence
- Level 3: Family urban road cycle skills
We also organise Bikeability cycle training through schools in Camden, teaching vital cycle skills during the school day to year 5 or 6 students. This training is organised by the school – ask your school if they've registered their interest in receiving this free training for their pupils.

Level 1: Learn to cycle
This course is for children who are learning to balance on a bike, how to start pedalling and how to stop. We prioritise children aged 8 (school year 3) and above.
This course teaches the basic skills of how to ride and have fun while learning. Training is held in the safe playground area of Haverstock School (NW3), near Chalk Farm Underground Station.
Some training bikes are available to borrow, but if you can, bring your child's own well-fitting, roadworthy bike.
Courses consist of two 45-minute sessions on consecutive days in the school holidays. If there are not enough bookings before the course, we may contact you to book an alternative session.
Level 2: Building cycle confidence
Away from traffic, children can practice essential skills such as signalling, observation and stopping quickly. Aimed at young people and children aged 8 or above who are able to ride unassisted and want to improve their safe cycling skills.

Level 3: Family urban road cycle skills
This course is aimed at children and parents or guardians. We teach children to cycle safely on quiet roads, and teach you to lead your child safely through traffic.
Training is delivered in family groups by a personal cycling instructor who tailors the course and the location of the training to your individual needs. This could include your route from home to school or a local leisure centre.
Your child will need good bike control skills, including signalling, stopping quickly and observation. We recommend that children practice these skills first at our child building cycle confidence group courses .
Training will begin away from traffic, moving onto quiet roads and busier situations as appropriate. Sessions last between 1.5 and 2 hours. All participants must have their own, well-fitting and roadworthy bikes.
You can request a preferred training date during registration. Our instructor will get in touch with you to arrange your cycle skills session individually.

Bikeability at Schools
Camden Cycle Skills training is offered to many children during the school day and is organised by the school. This is through a national training programme called Bikeability.
Primary schools can arrange for pupils in year 5 or 6 to learn to cycle on quiet roads around the school. Younger pupils are taught bike control skills within the school grounds. Pupils in early year groups can take part in scooter training and pedestrian skills sessions. Cycle training takes place over 4 or 5 days, with sessions lasting a few hours in the morning or afternoon.
Contact your school to find out if Bikeability training is available to your child. Schools looking for further information on Bikeability can email Camden's Cycle Training Office, richard.riddle@camden.gov.uk. We're keen to offer this cycle training in as many schools as possible.
