If you are disabled or have a disabled child
If you or your child is disabled, has a long-term health condition, or caring or mobility needs – there are three benefits you can apply for.
- Apply for Attendance Allowance if you’re 66 or over. For help to apply call 0800 731 0122.
- Apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) if you’re 16 and over. For help to apply, call 0800 917 2222.
- Apply for Disability Living Allowance for children if you have a child under 16. For help to apply, call 0800 121 4600.
Before you apply for benefits, get advice

Benefit advances and loans
- If you are in urgent financial need, you may be able to get an advance on your first benefit payment.
- If you have been on certain benefits for 6 months, you may be able to apply for a budgeting loan.
Council Tax reductions, discounts and exemptions
- Apply for Council Tax Support to reduce your council tax bill.
- A range of Council Tax discounts or exemptions are available including for single people and students.
- Discretionary Council Tax discount is available in exceptional personal or financial circumstances.
