Borrow a bicycle


If you are thinking about trying out cycling but don’t have a bike we can help! Why not borrow one from us, we have two options:

Try Before You Bike scheme


You can borrow a bicycle (or cargo bike) and we'll pay for most of the hire cost so it's is an affordable and user-friendly way to try an adult, child or folding bicycle for a few months.

You will get: 

  • free delivery to your door with accessories (helmet, lights and lock)
  • two hours free cycle training to re-familiarise you with cycling
  • support and encouragement to help you get confident on the roads 
  • free collection, if you decide it's not for you 
  • pay monthly options, with an easy to order process 
  • no deposit or hidden fees 
  • affordable purchase options, compatible with Cycle To Work  

Discount codes:

tbybmanualbike25: £180 subsidy - if you live, work or study in the London Borough of Camden you can get £45 per month off any pedal bike for four months. That is a 90% saving on the monthly subscription fee.
tbybcargobike2025 : £510 subsidy - if you live, work or study in the London Borough of Camden you can get £255 per month off any cargo bike for two months. That is an 85% saving on the monthly subscription fee.

Borrow a Brompton scheme


Borrow a fold-up bicycle (Brompton brand) for free for 4 weeks. A Brompton is a folding bike which is ideal for carrying around and you can store it in tight spaces and easily take it on public transport. Email us at: cycletraining@camden.gov.uk for details and availability.

Before your bike loan:

  • you will need to demonstrate that you can safely control the bike. If you need support, you can sign up for our free Camden Cycle Skills training.    
  • You will sign a loan agreement and provide a £50 deposit.
  • You will collect your bike from 5 Pancras Square Library, by arrangement.

During your bike loan

  • you will need to keep the bike secure at all times and avoid leaving it unattended on the street.
  • you will be responsible for the general upkeep of the bike including repairing punctured tyres. 
  • Please observe the highway code and any other rules which apply in public places. 
  • Please respond to all communication from Camden and notify us of any major issues affecting the bike. 

At the end of the bike loan (after 4 weeks):

  • you will return the bike to 5 Pancras Square library (by appointment) and reclaim your deposit.  
  • If the bike is lost or stolen you must tell the police immediately. You should also inform us as soon as possible via email cycletraining@camden.gov.uk. 
  • If the bike is damaged or lost due to negligence, such as not securing the bike, you will be liable for the value of the loss.
