Camden Kids Talk

Explore the language and communication resources for Mums, Dads and carers on Camden Kids Talk, including Ten Top Tips for getting your child to talk, suggested by Camden parents. 

eBooks and Audiobooks  

Listening to audiobooks helps children see how the words on the page can come alive. It helps with focusing on the sounds of words read without interruption, provides a model of fluent reading and help with improving listening. 

The “define vocabulary” option available when reading ebooks is a great tool when you’re unsure on the meaning of a word.

Comics Plus

Graphic novels, comics and manga are great for everyone, and even more for struggling readers. By offering a blend of text and images, these formats encourage children to engage with reading in a way that feels more manageable. 

This can reduce any frustration that may come with other text and can help children to build their reading skills and confidence gradually.

Britannica Library

Developed specifically for public libraries, Britannica Library provides library members with access to age-appropriate resources available anywhere, at any time and on any device. 

  • Britannica Library: Beginner gives you access to thousands of online articles, images, videos and biographies. This edition is designed for early learners to access to trusted sources of information to help with their homework, or just for the curious who want to know more about the world. 
  • Britannica Library Junior is aimed at young enquiring minds of 5 to 10yrs. This is an excellent resource for homework and projects. Key features include: Explore the Animal Kingdom, Geography Explorer Game & World Atlas together with subject articles, images, videos, and biographies.
  • Britannica Library Student (Age Group 10yrs – 14yrs) is a fantastic resource for homework, coursework and projects covering topics which includes Animals, Arts & Literature, Earth & Geography, History, Life Processes, Living Things (other), Philosophy & Religion, Plants, Science & Mathematics, Society, Sports & Recreation, Technology. Students can browse across all 12 subject areas for articles, images, videos or biographies and store research in their own My Britannica Account.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography hosts nearly 60,000 definitive biographies of great Britons and people who have influenced British history and culture.

Oxford Reference

Oxford Reference is a general knowledge database, offering access to more than a million entries from Oxford University Press dictionaries and encyclopaedias. 

Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the definitive guide to the meaning, history, spelling and pronunciation of over half a million words.

Oxford Dictionaries

Intended as a supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Dictionaries includes dictionaries for translating French, Spanish, German, Italian, Arabic and US English words and phrases. 

Who's Who and Who Was Who

Who's Who is the definitive current biographical directory of the most influential figures in British public life, as well as leading international figures. Who Was Who is the full archive of former entries from Who's Who, dating back to 1897.

Film and documentaries

Kanopy Kids on Kanopy is a curated educational and entertainment collection just for children, complete with parental controls so you can manage their viewing. Set up a PIN so your children will only be able to access the Kanopy Kids section, which has lots of great features, including TV shows and films, read-along storybooks, classic stories and myths, and language learning videos. Enjoy unlimited watching with your little ones.
You can use Kanopy on all your favourite devices, like your phone, tablet, desktop computer or Smart TVs.

BBC Bitesize provides interactive activities mapped against the national curriculum for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Covers early years, primary, secondary and 16+.

During term-time, the BBC is also showing Bitesize and other educational programmes on CBBC (for primary level) and BBC 2 (secondary level).  

Seneca has a huge range of online courses and resources covering primary school to 16+.

Learning by Questions is a wide-ranging resource covering English, Maths and Science at primary and secondary levels, plus Geography and History at primary. Designed to be an in-class teaching and learning tool but can be used to deliver question sets to pupils at home.

Children's University of Manchester - a suite of activities and resources covering history, languages, science, art and design and student life.

Quizlet is a website and app that provides learning tools, games and interactive flashcards covering topics on a wide range of subjects and difficulty levels, including GCSE resources for every subject.

BrainPOP - US website, with lots of resources on a range of subjects, both traditional school-based and topical subjects.

Memrise - an interactive programme to learn languages.

Kiddle - kids encyclopaedia to search for facts about homework topics, for homeschooling.

Books and writing stories

Bookfinder - Search thousands of hand-picked book recommendations to find a child’s next favourite read – from astonishing adventures to fantastic facts, our Bookfinder tool will help you discover the very best kids’ books.

Young writers - regular writing competitions for primary and secondary age children.

Art and crafts

Tate Kids - the Tate Gallery website has quizzes about:

  • art
  • an online painting programme
  • art and craft activities for kids

12 Museums - the Travel and Leisure website links you to virtual tours of 12 museums around the world, including the British Museum and Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
