Changing the name, gender and title you have registered with our services
When you register for our services, records are created with your name, gender and title. You can change these, usually by showing us some proof of your new details.
How to change your name
You can change your name:
when you get married, using a marriage certificate
when you enter into a civil partnership, using a civil partnership certificate
for any other reason using a deed poll
Deed poll
A deed poll is a legally binding document that states you’ve changed your name. There are 2 types of deed poll:
enrolled, where your new name is officially recorded
unenrolled, which is most commonly used
You can apply for an enrolled deed poll through our registrar service for £62, or submit the application yourself for £50.32.
You can make your own unenrolled deed poll for free. Some organisations only accept enrolled deed polls, so you should check with them. We do accept unenrolled deed polls.
How to change your gender
To legally change your gender, you’ll need to get a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), which costs £6.
You cannot change the name on a GRC once it’s been issued, so if you want to change your name too then you should do this first. If you change it afterwards, the certificate will still be valid but the names will not match.
How to change your title
You usually do not need any documents to change your title, unless it’s to a special title, such as Dr, Sir or Dame. In that case, you’ll need to give evidence for the change, such as proof of your PhD, knighthood or damehood.
