Window improvements on the Rowley Way estate

At the moment, 30% of the heat which escapes from Rowley Way homes is lost through the windows. This costs you money and contributes to climate change.

The window improvement works will include:

  • replacing single glazing with vacuum double glazing, fitted into Douglas Fir timber frames
  • repairing timber to match the original design, using approved materials
  • refurbishing window hardware, draught seals and moving parts
  • installing secondary glazing in selected areas, using approved systems
  • repairing or upgrading plywood panels and louvres
  • repainting and decorating woodwork inside and outside, following heritage rules
  • coordinating this work with heating upgrades, such as trench heaters
  • checking for asbestos around windows, sills, and soffits – and removing it where needed

Cost

There is no cost to leaseholders for this work.

Review of the glass specification

The re-glazing work in flats 26A and 46A did not increase the weight of the glass or affect how the windows work.

In response to your concerns, we're reviewing the glass specification. Before making a final decision, we'll test the chosen glazing in all flat types during the pilot phase. This pilot phase will assess usability and weight to make sure only suitable glazing is installed.

Timber windows

As part of the estate-wide improvements, all timber windows will be refurbished and fitted with high-performance double glazing. This will improve warmth and comfort while keeping the original frames wherever possible.

Metal-framed windows

The metal-framed windows overlooking the railway will have basic repair and maintenance. They cannot be re-glazed because of their narrow frames and conservation rules.
